The Other Sustainable

Posted by chuck

I am a “peak oiler”. I believe that oil is a billion years of sunlight stored conveniently in dead organisms and compressed into a convenient, consumable, liquid that we discovered 100 years ago (.1% of human history). We are ripping through it like a rabid dog rips through its dinner, without thought for what to do tomorrow or how wasteful the process is. Oil is of course finite and its consumption by definition unsustainable. But it’s not my point.

The Most Important 100 Years in the History of the Universe?

Posted by chuck

I think humans might be staggeringly important in the scheme of things. We have evolved to this almost unimaginable point that doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense. We have these Cadillac brains, which are laughably superior to other animals and seem unnecessary to prolong our survival as a species. The level of intelligence is not the equivalent of bringing a gun to a knife fight, we’re bringing preverbial submachine guns and nuclear weapons. On top of that, we have been blessed with hands (they’re pretty cool, you know) and sweat glands (arguably making us the best athletes on the planet). We will never have to worry about another animal threatening our dominance on this planet. It seems pretty darn lucky that we have evolved so far past what is needed to prolong the survival of our species.

Don’t bother me with facts, son. I’ve already made up my mind.

- Foghorn Leghorn

I’d like to issue my first of what I expect to be many Science vs. Religion posts and will offer the following statement first, and I think it’s a unique point of view:

I don’t know what the answer is.

I think that 997 out of the next 1,000 people that read this will do only one thing: try to reconcile it against their own personal view. I’m going to share a few thoughts anyway.

God’s Debris

God’s Debris is a book I read in my 20s written by Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic strip. The book has nothing to do with comic strips but is a pretty clear indication of the author’s ability to think in ways that most don’t. The story is fiction but in it he talks about different ways of explaining the world around us … he says that he doesn’t necessarily think the ideas expressed are true, but at the same time … “tell me why this can’t be true”. It’s good stuff.

I read it again recently and still think the “title track” (one idea of many in the book) is amazing. It goes something like this…

I know what tugs at your soul

The good, of course, is always beautiful, and the beautiful never lacks proportion.

- Plato

I enjoy trying to figure out why people do the crazy things they do. I’ve come to the conclusion that viewing behavior through the lens of evolution clears up most of the mystery, but that is certainly not the end of the story, nor is it my main point. I do think that the majority of our everyday problems are caused by the fact that technology and society has advanced beyond our body’s current evolutionary stop.
